Breaking: Gun duel at APC secretariat in Bayelsa, one feared dead

Lifeless body of one of the fatally shot victims at the APC secretariat

Guns boomed at the Bayelsa State secretariat of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Friday (today) as security officers and a group of suspected hired thugs engaged in a duel.

When the dust cleared, a middle-aged man lay dead and at least five others were badly injured.

The attack came on a day a new acting chairman and his executive were billed for inauguration for the party at the state.

Unconfirmed reports say the deceased was not a party member, and was a victim of a stray bullet,

The secretariat complex was thrown into a stampede as people ran helter-skelter.

The thugs, armed with placards and dangerous weapons, stormed the secretariat to disrupt the inauguration and to protest the expulsion last week of the former party chairman, Tiwei Orunimighe‎.

But the invasion, was resisted by security officers who shot sporadically into the air. An ex-militant leader was alleged to have fired the first shot.

The ensuing sporadic shots threw the residents of the state capital into panic.

A detachment of military men  later seized a bus with tinted glass believed to have been used by the attackers along the Bay Bridge Road in Yenagoa.

Speaking on the development, a member of the House of Assembly, Isreal Sunny-Igoli, expressed concern at the development.

He said: “APC members cannot be intimidated in Bayelsa State. We know and we believe that the party is on the path of rebuilding and enthronement of  peace within its fold. The sponsors of the attack will be brought to book.”

‎The attack came while party faithful were waiting for the state leader and former Governor, Timipre Sylva and his entourage.
