Boris Johnson will on Wednesday succeed Theresa May as the new British Prime Minister after winning the two -horse race Conservatives (,a.k.a. Tory) Party leadership race with an overwhelming vote of 92, 153, to defeat Jeremy Hunt, who polled 46, 656 in an election yb the general membership of the party.

Johnson, who had been the front runner to get the keys to 10 Downing Street since Mrs May tearfully announced her resignation at the same venue on May 24, was handed the reins of power at about 12.05 , when the hugely anticipated outcome of the Tory contest was announced at the Queen Elizabeth The II Hall in Westminster .

In his acceptance speech , the new PM told party faithful: “It is time to deliver BREXIT, Unite the country and defeat Jeremy Corbyn,” of the main opposition Labour Party. Sounding naturally very optimistic, he also promised that his government will “energise,” the country as well and was quick in acknowledging the fact that the job of governance has begun.

Hunt, who had been the underdog in the contest was magnanimous in defeat and showered encomiums on the new PM, saying he will be :”a great leader for our country at this critical moment.”

Meanwhile, the outgoing Prime Minister May has promised her successor :”full support,” from the back benches, where she will continue her political career as a Member of Parliament, MP for her constituency.

Johnson, who was once the Foreign Minister for May before resigning over his disagreement with the outgoing PM”s Brexit plans, used the first speech in reiterating his promise to deliver the outcome of the 2016 referendum by getting the country out of the European Union, EU, on the October 31 deadline date . However, the opponents of the former London Mayor , including the chancellor of the exchequer, Philip Hammond, have threatened to block his “No Deal” plans amidst fears it would be economically costly for the UK .

But U.S President , Donald Trump, has thrown his weight behind the new PM, noting that :”he will be a great .” Trump , who had prior to Johnson’s victory, described him as “a great guy,” during his three-day official visit to the UK last month, is not a loner. The EU chief Brexit negotiator, Michel Barnier , says the EU looks forward to a constructive working relationship with Mr Johnson.

As for the outgoing PM, her reign ends around midday Wednesday when, after taking her valedictory Prime Minister’s Questions in the House of Commons, she will then head to Buckingham Palace to formally inform the Head of State , the Queen, that she is resigning. Johnson will follow suit thereafter to tell Her Majesty of his election as the new PM and then go to assume office at No 10.
