Four over three decades, Elegant Stallion, Onyeka Onwenu, has remained Nigeria’s most consistent and prominent music diva. However, the young they say shall grow and the old shalow into the young. Showdown! feels it’s time to look for who steps into her shoes and two contemporary artistes come to mind. They are vocal power house, Omawunmi and sex siren, Tiwa Savage.
Born Boma Omawumi Megbele, the singer has been described as a vocal power house. She hit the limelight during Idols West Africa in 2007 where she came out first runners up closely losing to Timi Dakolo, Ever since she’s continued to carve a niche for her self and has won numerous awards and endorsements and is now a Glo Ambassador among others. Her first and second albums, Superwoman and Lasso of Truth have won her rave reviews and she’s currently one of Nigeria’s hottest singing sensations. Among others she has also bagged a series of awards including Best R&B/Pop Artiste 2010, courtesy, Nigeria Entertainment Award and Outstanding Recording Artiste, courtesy, Icon Awards among a host of others.
Tiwa Savage retuned to Nigeria in the late 2000s after she graduated from Berkley College of Music in the US to pursue her music career in Nigeria. To date she has done back up for great singers like George Michael and co-written the songs Collard Greens and Cornbread on Fantasia Barrino’s Grammy-nominated album, Back To Me. She has also performed on stage with the likes of Eminem, Destiny’s Child, 50 Cent, Robbie Williams among others. The award winning songwriter, vocalist, recording artist and performer hit the limelight in 2010 with her debut single, Kele Kele Love. Today she’s brand ambassador for MTN Nigeria and Pepsi and is currently signed to Sony/ATV Music Publishing Company and Marvin Records.
I can assure you that even if you ask Onyeka Onwenu, she would tell you its Omawunmi straight up. Omawunmi is the one though both artistes are great singers but Omawumi’s songs, just like Onyeka’s are didactic. Tiwa on the other hand sings more of feel good songs. Regarding the possibility of any of them fitting into Onyeka’s shoes, both are still a long way off! However, in terms of creativity and style, Omawumi should carry the day.
Henry Edem, undergraduate
They’re not comparable because both have different styles. But bringing the Elegant Stallion into the picture only means ceding the slot to Omawumi. Even the stallion has a soft spot for Omawumi.
Dele Balogun, Banker
I think it should be Omawumi. She’s a fantastic artiste with versatility like Onwenu. Her voice, costume and style somehow reminds you of Onyeka Onwenu. However, Tiwa is also a bunch of talent.
Omono Ruth, Benin
Aaaahh, it’s Omawumio. She has a powerful voice and always holds the audience spellbound. Omawumi fits into the original.
Onah Kaosi, Enugu-based Banker
Omawumi is the one. Both acts have great voices though. But if you’re comparing them with Onyeka Onwenu, Omawunmi should carry the day.
Dimgba Kelechi, Accountant
Both have carriage, charisma and compelling voices. But as for being a better star is, even Tiwa knows that Omawumi’s shoes are bigger than her’s; at least for now.
Uju Obiegbosi, Corps Member
Ah, it’s Tiwa Savage o. check out her collabos. I don’t like the way Omawumi sings. Tiwa is even finer and sexier.
Dapo, Lagos commercial bus driver
I go for Omawumi because she has songs that have more Naija favour. Her songs also preach moral degradation in the society while Tiwa is only interested in love songs. So, talking about Onyeka Onwenu,
