Activist Senator, Shehu Sani, on Monday morning threw a political bombshell — he declared that former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua was killed in office.

Claiming the discovery of “new facts,” which he however failed to disclose, the Kaduna State Senator demanded the opening of “a new investigation into what actually happened to the late president.”

According to him, the earlier belief that Yar’Adua died of natural causes “has proved otherwise.”

“What killed Umaru Yar’adua” he demanded.

“Who killed killed (sic) Umaru Yar’adua?” he asked again.

His statement read:

“With new facts emerging about Yar’adua’s death,President Buhari should open a new investigation into what actually happened to the late President. The hitherto belief was that his death was as a result of a natural, terminal illness, recent revelations has (sic) proved otherwise. We must clear this fog of history; What killed President Umaru Yar’adua and Who Killed Killed Umaru Yar’adua?”

Yar’Adua, who served as Katsina State Governor from 1999 to 2007, succeeded former President Olusegun Obasanjo in 2007, with former Bayelsa State Governor Goodluck Jonathan as his deputy.

As Governor, he had lived like a hermit and was hardly seen in public functions.

When he was named an aspirant for the office of President, Yar’Adua show signs of grave illness. During campaigns, he took ill and had to be flown abroad.

His campaign was largely conducted by the then outgoing President Obasanjo.

To mock Nigerians who expressed concern about the health of the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who had been hurriedly flown abroad for medical treatment, Obasanjo made a live telephone call to Yar’Adua, on campaign ground: “They said you are dead. Are you dead?”

On assumption of office, Yar’Adua suffered several bouts of illnesses and was flown to Saudi Arabia for medical treatment of pericarditis in 2009.

He was returned to Nigeria on February 24, 2010 and was pronounced dead on May 5, paving the way for the then Vice President Jonathan to emerge as President.

Pericarditis is inflation of the pericardium, the fibrous sac surrounding the heart.

It is believed to be cause by a viral infection.
