Three persons were feared dead and 17 others rescued when a boat conveying 20 passengers capsized mid-sea in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State on Saturday.
The boat, believed to have belonged to an organisation called the Edaolaropin/Bayeku Association had run into a submerged object in the Oke-Ira nla axis while heading to the Bayeku area of the town
The incident, which occurred at about 12:15pm was confirmed by General Manager of the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), Mr. Damilola Emmanuel, who said that an on-the-spot investigation carried out by his organisation revealed that the accident was caused by the object beneath the waterways.
He said that all the passengers wore life jackets adding that the death was probably a result of fear or shock.
“LASWA sympatises with the families of the deceased and the Agency is committed to achieving a zero incident rate on the waterways through enforced regulations and thorough risk management culture,” Emmanuel said
He, added that the spot of the wreck has been marked to avoid future occurrence while pledging that the state government, in conjunction with the Marine Police, would conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.
